Each Tense will be studied under four heads:-

 

1.       Affirmative                                -        He goes to school.

2.       Negative                                   -        He does not go to school.

3.       Interrogative cum Affirmative      -        Does he go to school?

4.       Interrogative cum Negative         -        Does he not go to school?

 



 

1.      Present Indefinite Tense




 

Identification:    This tense is used to express habitual action, general truth, to introduce quotations, running commentaries, sub-adverb clause, etc.


Rules:


Affirmative:           Sub + V1  + Obj.

[Add s/es with the verb if the subject is He/She/It/Noun(s)/This/That]


Negative:              Sub + do/does + not + V1  + Obj.

                             [Does: He/She/It/Noun(s)/This/That

                             Do    : I/We/You/They/Noun(P)/These/Those]


Int cum Affir:         Do/Does + Sub + V1  + Obj?


Int cum Neg:         Do/Does + Sub + not + V1  + Obj?

 

Uses:

 

(a)     To express Habitual Action (or daily routine).     If there are words in the sentence like always, never, seldom (not often), often, sometimes, daily, everyday, every month, once a week, twice a week, etc.

           

 (i)      He drinks (drink) tea every morning.

          (ii)     My watch keeps (keep) good time.

          (iii)    I get (get) up at 5 O’clock every morning.

 

(b)     To express General Truth (or Permanent Truth).

               

 (i)      The sun rises (rise) in the east and sets (set) in the west.

          (ii)     Fortune favours (favour) the brave.

          (iii)    The earth moves (move) round the sun.

          (iv)    This road leads (lead) to the post office.

          (v)     Delhi stands (stand) on the bank of the Yamuna.

 

(c)     To express events of present moment.

 

 (i)      I live (live) in Kamla Nagar.

          (ii)     Shalu reads (read) in Xth class.

 

(d)     In case of Sub-Adverb Clause (Conditional Clause).

 

(i)      If the school bus comes (come), I will board it.

(ii)     I shall wait till you finish (finish) your work.

(iii)    If it rains (rain), I shall get wet.

(iv)    When she returns (return), I shall convey your message.

(v)     If you insist (insist), I shall stay a little longer.

 

(e)     To introduce quotations.

         

(i)      Keats says (say), “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”.

(ii)     Browning says, “Who knows the world may end tonight”.

 

(f)    In exclamatory sentences beginning with see, here and there to express what is actually taking place in the present.

         

 (i)      Here comes (come) the bus!

          (ii)     There she goes (go)!

          (iii)    Here comes (come) my mother!

          (iv)    See, how it rains (rain)!

          (v)     There goes (go) the Principal!

 

(g)     To broadcast running commentaries.    Sourabh comes (come) in and balls (ball) to Rahul.  Rahul lifts (lift) the ball.  Sachin takes (take) a low catch.  Rahul goes (go) back to the pavilion.

 

(h)     In imperative sentences

                       

 (i)      Obey your elders.

          (ii)     Do not hate the poor.

          (iii)    Never tell a lie.

          (iv)    Please lend me some money.

 

(j)      News Headlines are written in Present Indefinite Tense.

               

 (i)      India leads (lead) high delegation to USA.

          (ii)     India wins (win) 20-20 and Pak loses (lose).
